Maureen’s Haven began in 2002 as a grassroots movement sparked by a former member of the Peconic Community Council (PCC). As an altruistic community member with a compassionate spirit, Kay Kidde refused to stand idle after witnessing homeless men and women sleeping in the woods by our local train station. Working alongside the PCC, Ms. Kidde initially funded this initiative and set our program into motion. Since then, many dedicated community members have worked tirelessly to build the organization that exists now. Maureen’s Haven (originally called the Peconic Housing Initiative) is named after Sister Maureen Michael, a public health nurse and Dominican nursing order member who tried to set up an outreach program to help those in need decades ago.
Who We Are
At Maureen’s Haven, we assist with providing homeless men and women with supportive services, access to case management and programs, and a safe place to stay during the winter months. With the gracious help of dedicated volunteers and various houses of worship, our program successfully gives those in need a place to sleep, nutritious meals, and shows them the love all humans deserve. Maureen’s Haven provides this valuable support through embracing the true value of human dignity. We are very fortunate to be surrounded by communities filled with businesses, organizations and houses of worship eager to help. Together we have been able to help meet the needs of the homeless, providing a place to stay and giving them access to the support needed to build a successful future. Our team of compassionate, diverse individuals treats each person we care for with respect, empathy, and compassion.
Recognizing that those in need require consistent access to supportive services we opened the Kay Kidde Achievement Center in Riverhead in 2012. This Day Center provides respite from the weather and offers year-round services benefiting the vulnerable members of our community. As the first of its kind in Suffolk County, our Day Center offers programs that help individuals rebuild their lives and achieve their personal goals. We provide supportive housing placement, support services, access to case management, connection to services, job assistance, counselling, and many other services to help our guests reintegrate into the community.
